 Whimsical Story Text–

As we well know Medusa can still turn any would-be gazer into stone even after her head has been successfully removed from her body. A head with this kind of power is dangerous, especially in populated areas. Years ago it was brought to a museum and after the head turned one of the curators to stone the other museum staff knew they had a big problem. Scrambling to figure out a solution before the exhibit opened they toiled and nothing came of their efforts so the head sat locked away for years in its display. The exhibit never opened.

One late night while working in his laboratory a Science Bro unrelated to the museum did an equation. He figured out that sunglasses would completely block the effects of the eyes' abilities. Before he made this discovery public, like any great scientist, he checked and rechecked the equation by writing it over and over on his chalkboard in chalk, then on his dry erase board in marker. Since it consistently looked good in both mediums it meant there was only one thing left to do...

...Days later in the room where the museum kept the head, up a few marble stairs, and in front of a room full of recently-turned-to-stone reporters with cameras rolling Science Bro triumphantly stood and placed the store bought sunglasses on her head. He exclaimed "I Got You, Bro." while nodding his head up and down, smiling, and giving a thumbs up with his right hand. The year was 4580A.H.E. and a commemorative shirt was made. All Bros and Bro-ettes of world rejoiced because they were shielded from further potential tragedies, their lives were saved.*

And while Medusa's head was detached from her body the hair of snakes lived on. As agitated as they were none of them could remove the sunglasses because snakes don't understand how sunglasses work.

 Actual Background–

The question came into my head, "What if one of the current time's most idiotically-worded sayings were combined with something from ancient times that was absolutely epic to the people of the time?" I am a lover of archaeology and have always been a lover of the Gorgons as monsters so I came up with the idea for the design you see on the  shirt.

I have had people staring at this design pondering its meaning. Thought and perplexity is what I sometimes strive for with my ideas and I am always amused when this stops people and gets them to focus on something other than a phone screen. Then in my experience it creates conversation and chuckles, which I also strive for.

 The Artist–

The artist I chose for this real world telling of the commemorative shirt that was made of that famous imaginary day was Jordu Schell, a fabulous artist and friend. I appreciate his abilities and willingness to indulge my nonsensical ideas. I highly recommend checking out his sculptures if you like realistic portraits and/or creatures.

Jordu, http://jorduschell.com, from his website: Schell Sculpture Studio offers the finest creature and character design available anywhere. While the Studio has been providing concept art in the industry for over ten years, owner and head designer Jordu Schell has been in the film and television industry since 1987. His talent as a designer and sculptor is world renowned, and his credits include: “Avatar”, “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”, “300”, “Hellboy”, “Aliens vs. Predator – Requiem”, “Men in Black”, “The Mist”, “Batman Returns”, “Edward Scissorhands”, “Alien: Resurrection”, “The X-Files Movie”, “Predator II”, “Galaxy Quest”, “Evolution”, “Babylon 5-The Series” (on which he designed an emmy award-winning creature make-up and the first fully digital creature for a television series), and many more. Schell Sculpture Studio is a full service sculpture and design facility with a wealth of talent to match the need of any project. Our studio specializes in creature and character design, props, prototypes for toys and model kits, general special effects work, and creature design classes.

My Favorite Aspects Of The Art–

My favorite aspects of this art is how the snakes are reacting to the incoming hand and the overall shape that they make. I can see such movement and reaction from the snakes and they're consistently impressive to me when I look at them. I have stared at this art for a while on several occasions and still love looking at it.

*People had been saved until some students playing hackey sack in the museum bumped Medusa's head's stand knocking off the sunglasses. The incident caused several people to be turned to stone including the hackey sack players. They are now frozen in time for all-time, forever playing hackey sack. The room the head is in has been closed and sealed for decades. With Science Bro missing who will be next to solve this problem and bring salvation to the citizens?
